How Was Thomas Sowell’s Early Life And Education?

Thomas Sowell was born on 30 June 1930 in Gastonia, North Carolina, United States. While he was a child, his father died leaving behind his mother and four children. Therefore, he was raised by his great-aunt.

Shortly after, his mother also passed away. At the age of 9, his family moved to Harlem, New York.

He completed his studies at Stuyvesant High School in New York. But due to financial problems in his family, he was forced to drop out at the age of 17. Then, he started several jobs.

In 1951, he was enlisted in military service during the Korean War. He was assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps. He faced a lot of racism as he grew up, but followed his passion for photography.

He was discharged in 1952 and completed his high school. After that, he started working as a civil servant in Washington.

He also attended night classes at Howard University. He scored well enough to get admission into Harvard University where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1958.

He earned his master’s degree from Columbia University in 1959.

In 1968, he received a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Chicago.

How Did Thomas Sowell Start His Career?

From 1965 to 1969, he was an Assistant Professor of economics at Cornell University.

In 1971, he published his first book named Economics: Analysis and Issues.

In 1976, he was offered a position as Federal Trade Commissioner by the Ford administration, but he withdrew from consideration. 

In 1980, he started as a Senior Fellow at Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He along with Henry Lucas organized a Black Alternatives Conference to bring black and white together.

He was also appointed as a member of the Economic Policy Advisory Committee of the Reagan administration. But he resigned soon after the first meeting.

In 1987, he testified in favor of federal appeals court judge Robert Bork in the supreme court.

He has also written many books about social policies on race, ethnic groups, education, etc. such as Black Education: Myths and Tragedies, Ethnic America: A History, The Economics and Politics of Race, etc.

He used to publish his column in the Creators Syndicate in the Forbes magazine, National Review, The Washington Times, and many others.

He has also been a part of The Rush Limbaugh Show.

His most recent book was published in 2020 which was Charter Schools and Their Enemies.
