Brandon Sanderson was born on 19 December 1975 in Lincoln, Nebraska, United States. He is the eldest of the four of his siblings. There is no information available regarding his parents. 

In 1994, after completing his high school studies, he went to Brigham Young University and did a major in Biochemistry. Then, from 1995 to 1997, he took a two-year leave of absence and served as a volunteer missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ.

He was assigned to serve in South Korea. After completing his service as a missionary, he returned to his college and changed his major to English Literature.

While doing his graduation, he did a job as a night auditor in Utah. He used to write while working.

In 2000, he completed his graduation with a Bachelor of Arts. Then he received an M.A. in English in 2004. He also worked on the staff of Leading Edge, a magazine published by the university. There he served as its editor-in-chief for one year.

In 2011, he released his e-book titled Infinity Blade: Awakening. In November, a sequel of the Mistborn series Mistborn: The Alloy of Law was published. It became the New York Times Best Seller.
