Rand Fishkin was born in 1979, in Seattle, Washington. His mother is Gillian Muessig. He grew up in Seattle and went to a nearby school for his early studies.
In 1997 he attended the University of Washington but later in 2000, he dropped out to start Moz. He got involved in search marketing during his college days. And started learning and acquiring knowledge through web forums and blogs.
Career
Rand Fishkin dropped out of the University in 2000. To work full time with his mother’s small business marketing firm as a web designer. In 2001, he started a blog named SEOmoz along with her mother. Which became the most popular source for search marketing.
In 2004, the company was rebranded as Moz. In 2007, the company transitioned from consulting to software. And Rand became the CEO of the company.
Under his role over the 7 years, he grew the company to $30 million in revenue, with 130+ employees, and 30 million visitors per year. In 2014 he stepped down from the role of CEO and in the next four years, he left the company. In 2021, Moz was acquired by iContact Marketing Corp.
He was also a co-founder of “Inbound.org”, along with Dharmesh Shah. The site was later sold to Hubspot in 2014.
In 2018, he co-founded “SparkToro”, along with Casey Henry. The same year he published his book “Lost and Founder: A Painfully Honest Field Guide to the Startup World”. He is a co-author of the book “The Art of SEO”.
