Early Life
Jonathan Haidt’s real name is Jonathan David Haidt. He was born on October 19, 1963, in New York City. He is Jewish and was raised in Scarsdale, New York. His grandparents immigrated from Poland and Russia.
He went to Yale University, and received a BA in Philosophy, in 1985. In 1992, he received a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Then he went to the University of Chicago to study cultural psychology as a postdoctoral fellow, under the supervision of Alan Fiske and Jonathan Baron.
And cultural psychology under Richard Shweder. Shwender suggested that he visit Orissa India to continue his research.
Career
In 1995, he began his career as an assistant professor at the University of Virginia. He worked there till 2011 and won several teaching awards including an award by the governor of Virginia.
He became active in the new field of positive psychology in the year 1999. And in 2003 he published an edited volume “Flourishing”. The following year he focused his studies in moral psychology to study politics.
In 2006, he released his best-selling book “The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom”.
During the year 2007-2008, he was the visiting professor at Princeton University.
In 2011, he was hired by the New York University Stern School of Business as a professor of Ethical Leadership. In 2012, he released “The Righteous Mind”.
He co-founded Ethical System in 2013. A non-profit collaboration, dedicated to research on ethics available to businesses. In 2015, he co-founded a non-profit organization “Heterodox Academy”. Which works to understand mutual understanding, viewpoint diversity, and productive disagreements.
He is a writer of several books including “All Minus One: John Stuart Mill’s Ideas on Free Speech Illustrated” and “The Coddling of American Mind”.
He has co-founded and collaborated with a variety of organizations including “OpenMindPlatform”, “Ethical System” and “Heterodox Academy”.
