Early Life
Daniel Goleman took birth on March 7, 1946, in Stockton, California, USA. He grew up in a Jewish household. He is the son of Irving Goleman, a humanities professor at Stockton College, and Fay Goleman, professor of sociology at the University of the Pacific.
And his maternal uncle was Alvin M. Weinberg, a nuclear physicist.
He attended Amherst College and was later transferred to the University of California. After college, he attended Harvard University.
He studied in India during his pre-doctoral fellowship from Harvard and a postdoctoral grant from the Social Science Research Council.
During his time in Indian, he spent time with Neem Karoli Baba, a spiritual teacher. Who was also the guru to Krishna Das, Ram Dass, and Larry Brilliant.
He authored his first book on travel to Indian and Sri-lanka. After returning from Indian he became the visiting lecturer at Harvard. These studies on the psychology of consciousness became popular at that time.
Career
His mentor David McClelland recommended him for a job at Psychology Today. From which in 1984, he was recruited by The New York Times.
As a science journalist, he has reported on the brain and behavioral science for The New York Times for 12 years.
He released his global best-selling book “Emotional Intelligence” in 1995. It sold more than 5 million copies and was published in 40 languages. Which spent one and half years on The New York Times Best Seller List.
Before this book in 1977 he published his first book “The Varieties of the Meditative Experience”. Which was republished in 1988 under the title “The Meditative Mind”.
In 2001, he released his book “Primal Leadership” based on leadership effectiveness.
He has co-founded the CASEL(Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning), earlier at the Yale Child Studies Center and now at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Goleman is currently a co-directs at the Consortium for Research on Emotional Intelligence in Organizations. And a board member of Mind and Life Institute.
He has come up with the book Healthy Emotions, and Destructive Emotions. After a deep conversation with the scientists and the Dalai Lama.
In 2013, he published his best-seller “Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence”.
He has written several other books and his work has been published on various platforms.
