His real name is Samuel Benjamin Watkins IV. Sammy Watkins was born in Fort Myers, Florida, on June 14, 1993. During his time at South Fort Myers High School, he earned varsity letters in football, basketball, and track & field. 

He is the younger half-brother of Jaylen Watkins, a defensive back for the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent.

With 33 receptions for 537 yards and 10 touchdowns in his sophomore year, he had an impressive return stat line. He was selected as a first-team all-state selection in his junior and senior years.

He was rated a five-star recruit by Rivals.com while he was offered scholarships from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, and Tennessee, he chose to play for Clemson University instead.

He caught 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman at Clemson University.

A record-breaking freshman, he broke 11 school records, including the all-purpose yards record held by C. J. Spiller. His football writing skills led to an All-American designation from the Football Writers Association of America.

During his sophomore year, he recorded 57 receptions for 708 yards and three touchdowns.

In his junior year, he played in all 13 games and had 101 receptions for 1,464 yards and 12 touchdowns. Upon declaring his intent to enter the NFL draft at the start of 2014, he decided to forgo his senior year.
