His real name is Samuel Benjamin Watkins IV. Sammy Watkins was born in Fort Myers, Florida, on June 14, 1993. During his time at South Fort Myers High School, he earned varsity letters in football, basketball, and track & field. 

He is the younger half-brother of Jaylen Watkins, a defensive back for the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent.

With 33 receptions for 537 yards and 10 touchdowns in his sophomore year, he had an impressive return stat line. He was selected as a first-team all-state selection in his junior and senior years.

He was rated a five-star recruit by while he was offered scholarships from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, and Tennessee, he chose to play for Clemson University instead.

He caught 82 passes for 1,219 yards and 12 touchdowns as a freshman at Clemson University.

During his sophomore year, he recorded 57 receptions for 708 yards and three touchdowns.
