Ralph Merkle’s real name is Ralph C. Merkle. He was born on February 2, 1952, in Berkeley, California. He is the son of Theodore Charles Merkle, a director of Project Pluto. His brother’s name is Judith Merkle Riley, who is a historical writer. Merkle is also a grand nephew of Fred Merkle, a baseball star.
He grew up in Berkeley and went to a nearby school for his initial studies. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in BA. And completed M.S in 1977 from the same college. In 1979, obtained his Ph.D. degree from Stanford University.
How Did Ralph Merkle Started his Career?
Ralph Merkle during his undergraduate, as a part of his class project invented “Merkle Puzzle”, a communication scheme over an insecure channel. Which is now recognized as the early example of “Public Key Cryptography”.
During that time he has invented and co-invented several projects such as:
- Merkle–Hellman knapsack cryptosystem
- Cryptographic hashing (Merkle–Damgård construction)
- Merkle trees
- Khufu and Khafre block ciphers and Snefru (While working at Xerox PARC)
In 1980 he started his career as a manager of compiler development at Elxsi. After that in 1988, he joined Xerox PARC, as a research scientist. In 1999, he joined “Zyvex”, as a nanotechnology theorist.
In 2003, he joined Georgia Tech as a distinguished professor. In 2006, he returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was a faculty member at Singularity University. And was also a board member of the Alcor Life Extension Foundation.
He was also involved in A science fiction novel called “The Diamond Age”, integrating Nanotechnology.
