David Shaw’s real name is David Elliot Shaw. He was born on March 29, 1951, in Los Angeles, California. His father was a physicist and his mother is an educator and artist.
At the age of 12 years old, his parents got divorced and his mother married his stepfather Irving Pfeffer. He was a professor of finance at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He attended the University of California, San Diego for his bachelor’s degree. Later for his Ph.D., he went to Stanford University in 1980.
Career
He started his career as an assistant professor of the computer science department at Columbia University. During that time he researched massively parallel computing with supercomputers.
He founded Stanford Systems Corporation, in his early career.
He joined Morgan Stanley in 1986, as a vice president in technology in an automated proprietary trading group. In 1994, he was appointed as a chairman of the panel of education technology, to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, by President Clinton.
In 1988, he founded his own hedge fund company “D. E. Shaw & Co”, based on proprietary algorithms for securities trading.
In 2000, he was elected as the board of directors of the American Association of the Advancement of Science. Then in 2007, Shaw was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Again in 2009, he was appointed to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, by President Obama.
He also works at Columbia University, as a senior researcher at the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. And an adjunct professor at Columbia’s medical school of biomedical informatics.
He is a chief scientist of D. E. Shaw Research, researches in the field of computational biochemistry.

David Shaw is married to personal finance journalist Beth Kobliner. They have three children. They live together in New York.
