How Did Mark Karpeles Start His Career?

Mark Karpeles began working as a software developer & network administrator at Linux Cyberjoueurs in 2003 and worked there until 2005. From July 2005 to September 2005, he worked for Fotovista

In September 2006, he joined Nexway and worked there as a software developer till January 2010. 

In 2009, he moved to Japan and founded a company called Tibanne Co. Ltd, a Japan-based bitcoin-related technology provider. Karpeles was also the founding member of Bitcoin Foundations, an organization that was started in 2012, with the mission to promote and standardize bitcoin. And he served there until February 2014. 

In 2011, Karpeles acquired a Bitcoin exchange site “Mt.Gox”, from a programmer Jed McCaleb. The company later got incorporated in Tokyo, giving the original owner 12% shares of the new company. 

At that time Mt.Gox was the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange but the exchange was hacked and worth $1.5 billion of cryptocurrency was stolen from the company. On February 28, 2014, the company filed for bankruptcy in Japan. 

In April 2018, Karpeles was asked to provide testimony, and was with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (United States Department of the Treasury), to appear in Washington, D.C. But he couldn’t appear because he didn’t have a lawyer for that matter. 

On August 1, 2015, he was arrested by the Japanese police, for having accessed the exchanges’ computer system with false data on its outstanding balance. The following year in July, he was released on bail but was required not to leave Japan.

On July 10, 2017, he pleaded “not guilty” to the data manipulation charges. On March 14, 2019, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison, for falsifying data to inflate Mt.Gox’s Holding by $33.5 million. Later he was found not guilty of the charges.

In April 2018, he joined ​​London Trust Media, as a CTO, it’s a company behind Private Internet Access and Freenode. 

On April 11, 2022, he announced his new company called “Ungox”, a rating and risk analysis for cryptocurrency exchanges. He has learned from his mistakes and failures and came up with a new project.
