His father John Ray Grisham was a cotton farmer and a construction worker, and his mother Wanda was a homemaker.

He was the second of seven children. 

When he was four years old, his family moved to Southaven, Mississippi.

He changed three colleges before receiving a degree. He first attended Northwest Mississippi Community College and then went to Delta State University in Cleveland. 

In 1977, he finally graduated from Mississippi State University where he received a B.S. degree in accounting. 

After his graduation, he enrolled in the University of Mississippi School of Law to become a tax lawyer, but during this time, his interest shifted to general civil litigation. In 1981, he graduated with a J.D. degree.

After dropping out of law school, Grisham participated in some missionary work in Brazil, under the First Baptist Church of Oxford.

In 1983, he won the election as a Democrat to the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983-1990. 

He was inspired by the passage of the Education Reform Act of 1982 and challenged the incumbent after becoming embarrassed by Mississippi’s national reputation.

He became the vice-chairman of the Apportionment and Elections Committee when he was in his second term in the state legislature. 

In 1985, Grisham started writing his first novel “A Time to Kill,” which is inspired by one of his cases. It took three years to complete the novel, and finally, in 1988, it was published by Wynwood Press with 5000 copies.

As soon as the novel was published, he started writing his second novel “The Firm.” 

In 1987, he supported Representative Ed Perry’s unsuccessful bid for the House speakership.

The novel was also on The New York Times Best Seller list for 47 weeks and became the seventh Best Selling Novel of 1991.

In 1992 and 1993, he wrote two books, namely “The Pelican Brief” and “The Client” respectively, which were the second best-selling books of the respective years. 

From 1994 to 2000, his books were the number one bestselling book every year.

In 2001, his two books, “Skipping Christmas” and “A Painted House” were in second and third place on the Best Selling list.

In 2002, once again, he secured the first position for his book “The Summons” in the best-selling list.

In 2004, his book “The Last Juror” was at number four, and in 2005, once again he returned to the number one position with his book “The Broker.”

In 2004, he produced a movie based on baseball called “Mickey.”

In 2010, he started writing a series of legal thrillers for children so that they can learn about law.

In 2013, again he was in the top five on the US best-seller list.

In November 2015 his novel, “Rogue Lawyer” remained at the top of the New York Times Fiction bestseller list for two weeks.
