Jay’s full name is Jay Anthony “Jaybird” Dobyns. He was born on July 24, 1961, in Hammond, Indiana, and grew up in Tucson, Arizona.
He was a standout athlete in various sports at Sahuaro High School. He is a football player at the University of Arizona.
He was named an All-Pacific-10 Conference wide receiver, a College Football All-American candidate at wide receiver, and a member of Arizona’s “All-Century” football team.
Dobyns earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration. He is a member of the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame as well as the Sahuaro High School Sports Hall of Fame.
He briefly played in the Canadian Football League (1985) and the United States Football League (1986) after graduating from college before deciding to become a federal law enforcement agent.
He was referred to as the “#1 Badass Arizona Football Player in History” by the Tucson Citizen newspaper in 2012.
How Did Jay Dobyns Start His Career?
Dobyns joined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) as a Special Agent in 1987.
He was held hostage at gunpoint in the Tucson desert less than a week after starting his operational duty while executing an arrest warrant on a convicted felon.
The suspect shot a single.38 caliber revolver round into Dobyns’ lung, exiting through his upper chest. When the other ATF agents fired fire from both sides of the car, the gunman was instantly dead.
Dobyns was seriously injured and brought to a Tucson hospital, where Dr. Richard Carmona, who later became the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, performed emergency trauma surgery that saved his life.
He refused to take a disability retirement despite the severity of his wounds and went back to work. He did over 500 covert operations over the next two decades.
In April 2002, a violent brawl erupted between the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club and their arch-rivals. Dobyns was a part of “Operation Black Biscuit,” a covert probe launched by federal law enforcement in response to the Mongols Motorcycle Club.
Dobyns became a New York Times bestselling author in 2009.
Dobyns presents the Copland podcast, which promotes heroic stories of personnel in law enforcement, fire services, and the military.
He stepped down in January 2014. He spent twenty-five years coaching young sports.
