How Was Gene Stallings’ Early Life And Education?
Gene Stallings’ real name is Eugene Clifton Stallings Jr., he was born in Paris, Texas, United States of America, on March 2, 1935, and attended Paris High School. In high school, he played as a sophomore with Raymond Berry. He was the captain of various other sports teams like basketball and golf.
From the very beginning, Stallings was into sports. He never showed much interest in his studies.
Stallings pursued his Bachelor of Physical Education degree from Texas A&M University in 1957.
How Did Gene Stallings Start His Career?
Stallings started playing for Texas A&M University and was recruited by the then coach Raymond George. He was also a member of the prestigious “Junction Boys” under the head coach Bear Bryant.
In 1956, he was the main reason why the team won its first-ever Southwest Conference Championship after more than 15 years.
After finishing his degree in 1957, he began his coaching career.
In 1958, Stallings worked as a defensive assistant for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama. He assisted him in two of Alabama’s national championships in 1961 and 1964.
In 1964, he helped the university to win the national title. After this victory, he was appointed as the Head Coach of the football team of his Alma Mater, Texas A&M at the young age of 29.
He coached Texas A&M for seven seasons, making a record of 27-45-1. During this time, the university won the Southwest Conference in 1967, which was his only winning season at A&M.
Interestingly, at the end of the season, Stallings’ team won over Bear Bryant’s Alabama team in the popular Cotton Bowl.
Stallings was fired at A&M following the 1971 season.
In 1972, he joined Dallas Cowboys as a secondary coach to Tom Sandry. He remained with the Cowboys for 14 long seasons and played an irreversible role in winning Super Bowl XII.
In 1986, he became the head coach of the Cardinals. In 1990, he returned to Alabama as the Head Coach.
In 1996, his team won ten titles. His team reached the finals but couldn’t win the national title. This was the year he announced retirement from his career.
Stallings received many awards over the years for his exceptional contribution as a coach. He was made the SEC Coach of the Year twice, in 1992 and 1994.
In 2000, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Texas A&M University.
He received the Humanitarian Award of the Lion’s Club of Alabama and the National Boys Club Alumni of the Year.
Stallings works a lot for the disabled community and serves on many such boards.
He co-wrote the book “Another Season: A Coach’s Story of Raising an Exceptional Son” with Sally Cook, a journalist.
