At the age of six, he received from his parents a Schneider CPC (German brand of the Amstrad Colour Personal Computer distributed by the Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG).
He started modifying computer hardware and rewriting game code by the age of 11 or 12.
After tenth grade, Lütke dropped out of school and enrolled in an apprenticeship program at the Koblenzer Carl Benz School to become a computer programmer.
In 2002, he relocated from Germany to Canada. Lütke mentions how as a teenager, John Carmack‘s mid-1990s plan files “making a huge impression” on him and were “a master class in systems design.“
