She was born in Cascais, Portugal, on May 7, 1976. She is the daughter of Eduardo Belo Van Zeller and Marta Filomena de Vilhena de Bettencourt.
In the past, she studied international relations at the Universidade Lusiada de Lisboa. In the two years following graduation, she applied three times to the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism for a master’s degree.
The first time she applied, it was rejected, and the second time, it was wait-listed.
A year later, she flew to New York City for her third application to meet the dean to share her dream of working as a journalist in the United States with him.

Mariana worked for two years at the Portuguese private television network SIC after graduating. Her initial role was in travel and international departments on the main channel.
