Marcus Smart’s real name is Marcus Osmond Smart. He was born in Flower Mound, Texas to Frank Smart and Camellia Smart, who passed away in 2018.

Marcus attended high school at Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. He maintained a record of 115-6 through his three seasons of high school and was twice named the 5A state champion. 

College Career

Marcus attended college at Oklahoma State from 2012–2014. He was considered a 5-star recruit by ESPN.com and was the No. 1 Shooting Guard and No. 10 player in the country in 2012.

Marcus Smart was the Round 1, 6th overall pick by the Boston Celtics at the 2014 NBA draft. He has been with this team since then. In July 2014, he signed his rookie scale contract with the Celtics and joined the team for the 2014 NBA Summer League. 

In his fifth NBA game against the Indiana Pacers, he suffered a foot injury and missed 10 games. In May, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

He suffered another injury while playing at the 2015 NBA Summer League. He scored his career-high 26 points in a 100-85 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder. He missed another 18 games due to another leg injury but came back with 6 points in 13 minutes against the Knicks.

In July 2018, Marcus re-signed a 4-year, $52 million contract with the Celtics. He suffered another injury and missed the end of the regular season. He returned in Round 2 of the playoffs and was later named to the NBA All-Defensive First team. Marcus scored a career-high of 39 points against the Phoenix Suns.

He tested positive for COVID-19 and later, the virus spread across the players and the NBA season was postponed indefinitely.

On August 16, 2021, the Celtics signed Smart to another 4-year $77 million extension on his contract. He was named the 2021–22 NBA Defensive Player of the Year on April 18, 2022.
