Joe Tsai’s birthplace is Taipei, Taiwan. His birthdate is January 1, 1964. His birth name is Tsai Ching-Hsin. 

His father is Paul C. Tsai, a second-generation lawyer, and his mother is Ruby Tsai. 

Eva, Vivian, and Benjamin are his younger siblings.

The Tsai family fled to Taiwan as part of the Kuomintang exodus when communists took control of Mainland China during the Chinese Civil War in 1949. 

Tsai moved to the United States at the age of 13 to attend Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he played lacrosse and football (inside linebacker) and was a member of Cleve House.

He then attended Yale University, his father’s alma mater. He was a member of the Yale varsity lacrosse team for four years and has remained a fan of the sport.

He graduated from Yale College in 1986 with a B.A. in Economics and East Asian studies. 

He received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1990, where he was the article editor of the Yale Law & Policy Review.

How Did Joe Tsai Start His Career?

After graduating, Tsai worked as a tax associate at the white-shoe legal firm Sullivan & Cromwell and was admitted to the New York Bar on May 6, 1991.

After three years at the law firm, he went to private equity and became vice president and general counsel at Rosecliff Inc., a small management buyout firm based in New York. 

In 1995, he moved to Hong Kong to work for the Swedish Wallenberg family’s financial firm Investor AB, where he was in charge of its Asian private equity projects.

It was in this capacity that he first met Jack Ma in Hangzhou in 1999, after being introduced by a friend who was attempting to sell his own firm to Ma. 

Later that year, he resigned from his job at Investment AB and offered to join Ma’s founding team.

At the time, each of Alibaba’s 18 co-founders – of which Tsai was the only one with a Western education – accepted a yearly salary of only $600. He was a founding board member, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer. 

He was appointed executive vice chairman of Alibaba in May 2013. After Ma, he has become Alibaba’s second-largest individual shareholder.

Tsai took over as the owner of the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and chairman of the Barclays Center in September 2019. 

He owns the Long Island Nets of the NBA G League as well as the Nets Gaming Crew of the NBA 2K League. 

He led a group that purchased the WNBA’s New York Liberty from The Madison Square Garden Organization in January 2019.
