Early Life

Iyanla Vanzant’s real name is Rhonda Eva Harris. She was born in the back of the taxi in Brooklyn, New York, on September 13, 1953. She was born to Horace Harris and Sarah Jefferson, a railroad car maid. 

When she was two years old. Her mother died of breast cancer. She was raised by her parental relatives.

She left her first husband in 1980, as he was physically abusive and she took full responsibility for her three children. She was titled “Iyanla”, which means a great mother. 

She went to Medgar Evers College and Virginia Union University for her studies. Later she attended the City University of New York School of Law and earned a Juris Doctor degree.

She then obtained her Master’s degree from the University of Santa Monica, on Spiritual Psychology.

Career 

She was ordained as a priestess in the Yoruba tradition, as she has mentioned in an interview on the Conn Jackson show

Later she began her career as an author, she published her first book in 1995 “Interiors: A Black Woman’s Healing in Progress”. The book became successful. 

And since then she has written several books including, “Peace from Broken Pieces, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, Until Today, Everyday I Pray, Living Through the Meantime and many more…

Again in 2018, she released her most recent book called “Get Over It! Thought Therapy for Healing the Hard Stuff”.

Apart from being an author, she has appeared in several television shows as a host and as a guest appearance. 

She started as a host in 2001, for the TV show “Iyanla”. She has also worked as a host for the show “Starting Over, Life Coach”. 

Currently, she is hosting a show called “Iyanla, Fix My Life”, on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
