Ochoa debuted for Club América in 2004 through a Mexican league match against Monterrey.

As a Mexican international since 2005, he earned his first cap at the age of 20 in a friendly match against Hungary.

Coach Ricardo La Volpe chose Ochoa as the third-choice goalkeeper for the FIFA World Cup in 2006.

He was appointed captain of the under-23 team that would compete in the Olympic qualifiers in order to compete in the Summer Olympics in 2008. Mexico failed to qualify after exiting the group stage.

On March 28, 2009, he made his 2010 World Cup qualification debut against Costa Rica and went on to play most of the qualification matches. 

Ochoa was named to Mexico’s CONCACAF Gold Cup squad in 2009.

He was sent to Ajaccio, France, that summer. He was in the team for three seasons before they were relegated from Ligue 1. 

He, along with four other members of Mexico’s national team, tested positive for the prohibited drug clenbuterol during the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup and was removed from the country’s tournament squad. 

The Mexican Football Federation later acquitted all of the players, and the results were blamed on meat contamination, with the ingestion of clenbuterol ruled unintentional.

Ochoa joined Málaga in 2014 but failed to make an impression.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics, in 2014, named Ochoa the World’s Best Goalkeeper.

On May 9, 2014, he was named to Mexico’s 23-man World Cup roster. He made his World Cup debut after being called up for the previous two tournaments but was unable to participate.

Ochoa joined Granada on a season-long loan in July 2016. He joined Standard Liège in July 2017. He rejoined Club América in August 2019.
