How Was Gabor Maté’s Early Life And Education?

Gabor Maté was born on January 6, 1944, in Budapest, Hungary.

His maternal grandparents were murdered in Auschwitz when he was just five months old.

His aunt vanished during the war, and his father was subjected to forced labor at the hands of the Nazi Party.

His mother left him in the care of a stranger when he was one year old in order to save his life. As an infant, he was so devastated upon their reunion that he avoided looking at his mother for several days.

Maté immigrated to Canada in 1956. During the Vietnam War, he was a student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he graduated with a B.A.

After several years of teaching English and Literature to high school students, he returned to the University of British Columbia to earn his M.D. in general family practice in 1977.

How Did Gabor Maté Start His Career?

Maté had a private family practice in East Vancouver for over 20 years.

For seven years, he was the medical coordinator of Vancouver Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit.

He worked as a staff physician at the Portland Hotel, a downtown Vancouver resident and resource center, for 12 years. Many of his patients had co-occurring mental health and substance use issues as well as chronic health conditions like HIV.

In Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, he worked in harm reduction clinics.

In his book “Realm of Hungry Ghosts,” Maté wrote about his experiences working with people who have substance use disorders.

He made national headlines after the federal Minister of Health, Tony Clement, criticized the physicians at Insite (a legally supervised safe injection site) as unethical.

He became interested in the ancient Amazonian plant medicine Ayahuasca and its possibilities for addiction treatment in 2010.

He collaborated with a Peruvian Shipibo Ayahuasquero (traditional healer) to launch multi-day addiction treatment retreats including ones in a Coast Salish First Nations community.

Although the research was preliminary and limited by the observational study design, the findings demonstrated that Maté’s claims of therapeutic efficacy were well-founded.

The participants had significant improvements in some psychological measures and experienced reductions in problematic substance use.

When the Canadian federal government discovered Mate’s ayahuasca work in 2011, Health Canada threatened him with arrest if he did not immediately cease his illegal drug practices.

In 2008, Health Canada‘s own research on ayahuasca revealed that the dangers connected with the ceremonial use of the brew were very low and that it had significant potential benefits for spiritual and self-actualization objectives.

Maté has written five books on issues such as ADHD, stress, developmental psychology, and addiction.

Currently, he writes a column for the “Vancouver Sun” and “The Globe and Mail” on a regular basis.
