How Was Anthony Jeselnik’s Early Life And Education?
Anthony Jeselnik was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States, to Stephanie and Anthony F. Jeselnik.
In 1997, Anthony graduated from Upper St. Clair High School. He pursued a bachelor’s degree in English literature and a minor in business from Tulane University in 2001.
While attending Tulane University, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. His original goal was to pen the great American novel.
Later, he did an internship between his junior and senior years of college, which convinced him there were other opportunities for writers.
Jeselnik moved to Los Angeles in his early twenties and started working at a Borders group, where he first tried stand-up. He discovered a book by writer and comedian Greg Dean that advertised Dean’s comedy workshops in Santa Monica.
Jeselnik’s first attempt at a joke involved him impersonating his father being stung by wasps. No one laughed by the end of the skit, which lasted only one minute but “felt like ten,” prompting him to swear off physical comedy for good.
After writing a strange joke with a dark twist, the audience’s response encouraged him to concentrate more on that subject.
Later, Jeselnik found his “home” at the Comedy Cellar, where they let him take earlier sets so he could get home early and sleep for work the next day. He was influenced by the Cellar comedians, who were known for busting other comedians’ expertise.
Jeselnik said the best cellar comedians were Jim Norton, Colin Quinn, Bobby Kelly, and Keith Robinson.
