The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, and it received the top Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic competition. It was released in theaters on July 20, 2013, and was produced by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker.
In 2015, Coogler released his second picture, “Creed,” a “Rocky” film spin-off that he directed and co-wrote with Aaron Covington. Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone starred in the film.
It garnered positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, grossing more than $173 million worldwide.
Coogler became the first black Marvel Studios filmmaker when he co-wrote and directed the Marvel feature “Black Panther” in 2018. Chadwick Boseman played the protagonist in the film. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, won three of them, and received numerous additional honors.
