Coogler made four short films while attending the USC School of Cinematic Arts, three of which won or were nominated for various awards. 

“Fruitvale Station,” his debut feature-length film, was released in 2013. It tells the tale of Oscar Grant, who was shot to death by a police officer at Oakland’s Fruitvale BART station. 

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, and it received the top Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the dramatic competition. It was released in theaters on July 20, 2013, and was produced by Oscar-winning actor Forest Whitaker.

In 2015, Coogler released his second picture, “Creed,” a “Rocky” film spin-off that he directed and co-wrote with Aaron Covington. Michael B. Jordan and Sylvester Stallone starred in the film.

It garnered positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, grossing more than $173 million worldwide. 

Coogler became the first black Marvel Studios filmmaker when he co-wrote and directed the Marvel feature “Black Panther” in 2018. Chadwick Boseman played the protagonist in the film. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, won three of them, and received numerous additional honors.

 In 2021, Coogler worked as a co-producer alongside Charles D. King on the Fred Hampton biopic titled “Judas and the Black Messiah,” which was directed by Shaka King.

The film gained critical praise, and Coogler, Shaka King, and Charles D. King were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, the first for an all-black producing team. 

Coogler and Jordan will collaborate for the fifth time in the upcoming film “Wrong Answer,” which is based on the Atlanta Public Schools cheating scandal.
