He was raised and nourished by his father, Benny Mills, who was a Torres Strait Islander, and his mother, Yvonne Mills, who was an  Aboriginal Australian, hence he turned out to be an amazing conflation of both.

He averaged during his rookie season, in the range of 2.6 points in 3.8 minutes, with his season-high 11 points on the 14th of April against the Golden State Warriors, which later turned to 5.5 points and 1.7 assists in 12.2 minutes. 

During the 2011 NBA lockout, Patty Mills returned to Australia to play in the National Basketball League, for the Melbourne Tigers. On 7th October 2011, he scored a high range of 28 points in a win over 82-76 against the Sydney Kings.

After this he joined a Chinese team, the Xinjiang Flying Tigers till the NBA lockout ended. During his time on this team, he scored an average of 18.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. He left the team with a knee injury which caused a lot of controversies later.

On 27 March 2012, Mills signed with the San Antonio Spurs and had been playing there till 2021. Initially, he set his career highs averaging 34 points and 12 assists, and a double-double in defeating the Golden State Warriors. 

On 18 January 2021, he made an extraordinary NBA record for most 3-point shots made for a team as a reserve.

On 10 August 2021, Mills was reportedly seen signing with the Brooklyn Nets. His debut for Nets was highlighted by scoring 21 points on 7-of-7 shooting from deep but unfortunately, losing to the Milwaukee Bucks. He gathered eight three-pointers and broke the record for the most three-pointers made on the 25th of December, 2021.
