Nora Roberts’s birthdate is October 10, 1950, and her birthplace is Silver Spring, Maryland, United States. 

Both her parents have Irish ancestors. Their names are not known so far. She was the youngest of five.

To complete her high school studies, she went to a Catholic school in her hometown. During her second year in high school, she transferred to Montgomery Blair High School.

She did not attend college due to her marriage immediately after graduating from high school.

How Did Nora Roberts Start Her Career?

As soon as she graduated from high school, Roberts got married and later had two kids. 

In February 1979, while being at home with her kids, she started writing. 

While writing for the first time, she loved the process and eventually wrote six manuscripts. She submitted those to Harlequin, which was the leading punisher of romance novels at that time. But, her manuscripts were rejected.

In 1980, Silhouette Books decided to publish all the manuscripts of American writers that were rejected by the Harlequin. 

Roberts’s first novel “Irish Thoroughbred” was finally published in 1981. She wrote it under the pen name Nora Roberts.

From 1982 to 1984, she wrote about 23 novels for Silhouette, which were printed among various imprints of the company such as Silhouette Sensation, Silhouette Special Edition, Silhouette Desire, etc.

In 1985, she released another novel titled “Playing the Odds,” and it was an immediate bestseller.

This publishing company suggested that she should adopt a new pseudonym so that they can publish more of her novels frequently. So, in 1995, she wrote her first romantic suspense novel under the new pseudonym J. D. Robb.

In 1996, she released her hardcover novel “Montana Sky,” which was her hundredth book.

In 1999 and 2000, four out of her five novels were on the USA Today list for being bestselling romance novels. 

From 1991 to 2001, she had 68 New York Times bestseller novels.

She is one of the founding members of the Romance Writers of America. She won the RWA Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

According to Publishers Weekly, in 2001, she had 10 best-selling mass-market paperbacks.
