Early Life and Education

Monty Williams’ real name is Tavares Montgomery Williams. He was born to Joyce and Tacares Williams in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Williams attended high school at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill, Maryland. He played as a forward throughout his high school, college, as well as a professional career.

Playing Career

Williams went to the University of Notre Dame, where he played on the basketball team as a small forward. He was picked in the 1st round as the 24th overall pick by the New York Knicks in the 1994 NBA draft. He played professionally from 1994 to 2003 despite his heart condition.

He played for the New York Knicks until 1996 and was then traded to the San Antonio Spurs. He had a brief stint with the Denver Nuggets but was transferred to the Orlando Magic, where he played until 2002.

His final year as a professional basketball player was with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was reacquired by the Orlando Magic for three days before getting waived and thereby ending his professional playing career.

In total, Monty Williams played 456 games and scored a total of 2,884 points, with an average of 6.3 points per game. He retired due to knee problems in 2003.

Coaching Career

In 2005, Monty Williams was a staff intern with the San Antonio Spurs, where he won an NBA championship. Thereafter, he was hired as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers by the new head coach, Nate McMillan.

In June 2010, Williams signed a 3-year head coach contract with the New Orleans Hornets and became the youngest head coach in NBA history while being 38 years old. Under him, the team recorded a 46-36 record and made it to the playoffs. 

His contract was extended for another 4 years, and in 2013, Williams became an assistant coach with the US national team for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

In 2015, Williams joined the Oklahoma City Thunder as the associate head coach for a year, and in 2018, he became the lead assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Finally, in May 2019, Williams was announced as the new head coach for the Phoenix Suns under a 5-year contract. 

Williams was named the NBCA Coach of the Year for the 2020–21 NBA season and finished second in the NBA Coach of the Year list. 

They also won the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Clippers in six games, which brought them to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1993. The Milwaukee Bucks beat the Suns in 6 games.

In 2022, Williams was named Western Conference head coach for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game due to his team’s NBA-best record of a league-best 40-9 record this season.
