How Was Malcolm Gladwell’s Early Life And Education?

Malcolm Gladwell’s birthplace is the English town of Fareham, Hampshire in England. His date of birth is September 3, 1963.

Joyce Gladwell, who is a Jamaican psychotherapist, is his mother. His father Graham Gladwell was an engineering and mathematics professor at the University of Waterloo. He has two older brothers.

When he was six years old, his family shifted from Southampton to the Mennonite settlement of Elmira, Ontario, Canada.

Gladwell spent his childhood in rural Ontario Mennonite country, where he went to a Mennonite church.

He was 11 years old when his father allowed him to stroll around his university’s offices. This sparked his interest in reading and libraries.

In 1984, he received his bachelor’s degree in history from Trinity College at the University of Toronto.

He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Waterloo in 2007.

He interned at the National Journalism Center, Washington D.C., in the spring of 1982.

How Did Malcolm Gladwell Start His Career?

Gladwell’s grades were insufficient for graduate school, so he decided to pursue a career in advertising. After accepting a journalism post with the conservative magazine The American Spectator, he relocated to Indiana.

He then wrote for Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church’s conservative journal, Insight on the News. He began covering business and science for The Washington Post in 1987, where he remained until 1996.

He gave a personal explanation of the 10,000-hour rule and popularized it in his work “Outliers.”

When Gladwell started at The New Yorker in 1996, he sought to explore contemporary academic research for insights, theories, direction, or inspiration. His first task was to write a fashion piece.

Instead of writing about high-end fashion, he chose to write about a man who made t-shirts.

He rose to prominence with two New Yorker articles, “The Tipping Point” and “The Coolhunt,” both published in 1996. He still works as a contributor to The New Yorker.

Gladwell’s debut book, “The Tipping Point,” was based on these two essays, for which he earned $1 million as advance.

Gladwell published “What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures,” a collection of some of his New Yorker essays. This also includes his award-winning feature of inventor Ron Popeil (2009).

He is the host of the podcast “Revisionist History,” which was originally produced by Panoply Media and is currently produced by Gladwell’s own podcast firm.

He also hosts the “Broken Record” music podcast with Bruce Headlam and Rick Rubin, in which they interview musicians.

He also contributed to Grantland, a sports journalism website launched by former ESPN columnist Bill Simmons.

Malcolm Gladwell’s Personal Life

Gladwell drifted away from his religious origins when he went to New York, only to rediscover them while writing “David and Goliath” and meeting and talking to Wilma Derksen about the death of her child.

He was a national class runner and an Ontario High School (OFSAA) winner. Gladwell was one of Canada’s fastest teenagers in 1500m, running 4:14 at the age of 13 and 4:05 at the age of 14.
