What Was Kate Burton’s Early Life and Education Like?

Burton was born in Geneva, Switzerland, the daughter of Welsh parents, producer Sybil Burton and actor Richard Burton.

Burton completed her bachelor’s degree in Russian Studies and European History from Brown University in 1979, and her master’s degree in 1982 from Yale School of Drama. Brown conferred an honorary degree on Burton in 2007.

Her first noteworthy Broadway role was in George C. Scott’s 1982 production of Noel Coward’s comedy Present Laughter. The next year, she played J.J. in the Broadway musical Doonesbury. Burton also played Alice in Eva Le Gallienne’s Alice in Wonderland on Broadway.

Following that, she landed significant parts in Wendy Wasserstein’s An American Daughter and Martin McDonagh’s The Beauty Queen of Leenane.

She was nominated for two Tony Awards in 2002: Best Actress in a Play for her depiction of the title character in Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, and Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performances as Pinhead/Mrs. Kendal in The Elephant Man revival.
