Jon Voight’s real name is Jonathan Vincent Voight. He was born in Yonkers, New York, U.S, on December 29, 1938. He is the son of professional golfer Elmer Voight and Barbara

He has two brothers, James Wesley Voight, famous as Chip Taylor, a songwriter, who wrote “Angel of the Morning” and “Wild Thing”. His second brother Barry Voight, a former volcanologist at Pennsylvania State University. Joseph P. Kamp, a political activist, was his great uncle. 

He went to Archbishop Stepinac High School, New York. Where he has developed his initial interest in acting. He attended The Catholic University of America, in Washington, DC, in 1956 and graduated with B.A. 

He moved to New York City after his graduation to pursue an acting career. And attended  Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. Where he studied under the guidance of Sanford Meisner.

Career 

He started his career in television roles appearing in many series of “Gunsmoke” from 1963 to 1968. Also as a minor role in “The Defenders”, “Naked City”, “Twelve O’Clock” and “Cimarron Strip”.

In 1969, he got his breakthrough role in the film “Midnight Cowboy” for playing Joe Buck, a male Hustler.

In 1970, he appeared in Mike Nichols’ “Catch-22” and “The Revolutionary”. In 1972, he starred in “Deliverance”. In 1973, he appeared as a younger boxer in “The All American Boy”.

In 1974, he appeared in the film “Conrack” based on the autobiographical novel “The Water is Wide”. The same year he appeared in the film “The Odessa File”. He appeared in “End of the Game” in 1976.

In 1978, he starred in the film, “Coming Home”, for which he was awarded Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year he appeared in the film “The Champ”, the film became famous globally but didn’t do well in America.
