Early Life & Education

Joe Burrow’s real name is Joseph Lee Burrow. He took birth on December 10, 1996, in Ames, Iowa. He is the son of Jim Burrow and Robin. His father was a player and coach in football.

In his youth, Burrow’s father was an Iowa State Cyclones staff member. His paternal grandmother set a Mississippi state high school record with 82 points in basketball in the 1940s.

The grandfather of John Burrow played basketball at Mississippi State. His uncle, John Burrow, played football at Ole Miss, and two older brothers played football at Nebraska.

As his father was a Nebraska assistant coach, he attended the Rose Bowl at age five. Shortly thereafter, he started playing youth football.

As a quarterback, Burrow started on his first youth team because he was the only one capable of playing the position. His father, uncle, and brothers all played defense.

As a student at Athens High School in The Plains, Ohio, Burrow led the school to three straight playoff appearances and seven wins in school history. In 2014, he was named the Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football Award winner in the state.

Burrow was ranked as the eighth-best dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015 and was rated as a four-star. In May 2014, he pledged to Ohio State.

By unanimous vote, the Athens City School District board named the football stadium after Burrow.

The Ohio State University decided to offer Burrow a scholarship in May 2014. His sophomore and junior years were spent backing up J.T. Barrett after redshirting in his freshman year.

After graduating early from Ohio State, Burrow transferred to Louisiana State University in 2018. In his first season with LSU, he won two SEC Offensive Player of the Week awards, led the Tigers to a 10-3 record, and was ranked sixth in the final AP poll.

In 2019, he was awarded the Heisman Trophy by the largest margin in the award’s history, with 1,846 more votes received than Jalen Hurts, the runner-up.

During his outstanding LSU career, Burrow guided the Tigers to the 2020 National Championship Game, where they defeated 42-25. In the 2020 NFL Draft, Burrow was picked first overall by the Cincinnati Bengals. Burrow won his first career game against the Jacksonville Jaguars

He had a great game in Week 7 when he recorded at least 400 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown in the same game.

Burrow, however, was forced to enter the injured reserve list following ACL and MCL injuries he suffered in Week 11. Burrow returned to the field during the 2021-22 season.

He won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week Award during Week 4. He went on to throw for 525 yards in Week 16, the fourth-most passing yards in a single NFL game.

With a win over the Kansas City Chiefs the next week, the Bengals advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2015.

The team won its first playoff game since 1990, by beating the Las Vegas Raiders in the wild card round. This ended the longest active drought in major North American sports.

The Bengals bested the Chiefs in overtime to win 27-24 in the AFC Championship Game 21-3, led by Burrow. With this victory, the Bengals secured their first trip to the Super Bowl since 1988.
