Early Life & Education

Joe Bryant was born in Philadelphia on October 19, 1954. There is less information about his parents or siblings.

He grew up in Philadelphia and went to John Bartram High School for his studies. Jor started playing high school basketball for John Bartram and two years of college ball at La Salle University in Philadelphia.

Career

After college, Joe Bryant was selected as the 14th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors. He was later traded for his hometown team of Philadelphia 76ers. Where he played for four seasons. Bryant helped the Sixers in reaching the 1977 NBA Finals. However, they eventually lost to Bill Walton and the Portland Trail Blazers in six games.

Bryant also played for the San Diego Clippers, where his minutes and role increased as he became one of the teams’ scoring options. In the 1979-1980 season, San Diego Clippers played the Los Angeles Lakers and Joe Bryant made a memorable play in his debut with the Clippers as he emphatically slammed the ball over Kareem Abdul-Jabber.

Joe Bryant then shifted to the Houston Rockets. Where he played 81 games. This happened to be his final season in the NBA.

From 1983 to 1991, Joe Bryant decided to play overseas for various Italian teams — namely AMG Sebastiani Rieti, Standa Reggio Calabria, Olimpia Pistoia, and Reggiana

In 1992 he played for the last time for French club FC Mulhouse Basket after which he ended his playing career and moved back to the United States.

Joe Bryant slowly shifted into coaching. Initially, he was tapped as the head coach of the Akiba Hebrew Academy women’s team in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania. 

Bryant was also an assistant coach at La Salle University. Where he stayed for three years before deciding to leave when his son Kobe Bryant decided to enter the NBA straight out of high school. Bryant was later named the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks, where he replaced former teammate Henry Bibby on August 22, 2005.

Although he was later replaced by Michael Cooper after the 2006-2007 season. Bryant did make a comeback with the Sparks during the 2011 season and helped the team gain 5th position in the Western Conference.

Bryant also received opportunities to coach several Japanese, Italian, and Thailand basketball clubs and teams.
