Dionne learned to sing gospel music at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where she was raised.

After completing her high school education at East Orange High School in 1959, she enrolled at West Hartford, Connecticut’s Hartt College of Music.

How Did Dionne Warwick Start Her Career?

While Dionne was recording backup vocals for the Drifters’ song “Mexican Divorce,” Burt Bacharach became aware of her voice and celebrity status.

In 1962, Scepter Records signed Warwick to Bacharach and Hal David’s production firm, which in turn signed Warwick to Scepter Records.

Scepter Records issued “Don’t Make Me Over,” her debut solo record, in November 1962. Dionne started using the new spelling of her name because it was misspelled on the single’s label (i.e., “Warwick”).

She then released “The Empty Place,” the B side of which contained “Wishin and Hopin,” one of her most well-known tracks.

Warwick’s top 10 song, “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” was his debut single. She released the song “Walk On By” in April 1964, and it quickly became a big hit around the world.

Before switching to Arista Records in 1979, Warwick recorded five albums with Warner. There, she started a second successful run of hit singles and albums that lasted well into the late 1980s.

Warwick served as the host of infomercials for the Clairvoyant Friends Network in the 1990s, which featured Linda Georgian, a self-described psychic.

Warwick’s most well-known album during this period, “Friends Can Be Lovers,” was released in 1993.

After a fifteen-year run at Arista that ended in 1994, Warwick joined Concord Records in 2006. “My Friends and Me,” a duets album including reworkings of her earlier successes, was her first and only release for the label, and it was very similar to her 1998 CD “Dionne Sings Dionne.”

Only Trust Your Heart,” a New Jazz style CD featuring several Sammy Cahn songs, was released in 2011. In March 2011, Warwick made her debut on “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

Feels So Good,” a duet album, was published in 2014. Funkytowngrooves reissued with extra content the remixed Arista albums “No Night So Long,” “How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye” (“So Amazing”), and “Finder of Lost Loves” (“Without Your Love”).
