Amanda Gorman’s real name is Amanda S. C. Gorman. She was born on March 7, 1998, in Los Angeles, California, U.S. She was raised by a single mother Joan Wicks, a 6th-grade English teacher in Watts. She has a twin sister, Gabrielle, who is an activist and a filmmaker.
Her access to television was limited growing up. She ended up writing and has labeled herself as a “weird child” who enjoyed reading and writing and was encouraged by her mother.
Gorman is hypersensitive to sound due to an auditory processing disorder. As a child, she struggled with speech impediments.
In childhood, Gorman attended speech therapy and saw her speech impediment as a gift and strength rather than a disguise. That helped her to excel at writing and reading.
