Amanda Gorman’s real name is Amanda S. C. Gorman. She was born on March 7, 1998, in Los Angeles, California, U.S. She was raised by a single mother Joan Wicks, a 6th-grade English teacher in Watts. She has a twin sister, Gabrielle, who is an activist and a filmmaker.
Her access to television was limited growing up. She ended up writing and has labeled herself as a “weird child” who enjoyed reading and writing and was encouraged by her mother.
Gorman is hypersensitive to sound due to an auditory processing disorder. As a child, she struggled with speech impediments.

In 2014, she was chosen as the 1st youth poet laureate of Los Angeles. The 16-year-old has been writing a novel over the last two years. She published her poetry book “The One for Whom Food Is Not Enough”, in 2015.
The following year, she founded a youth writing and leadership program “One Pen One Page. In 2017, he became the first author to get featured on XQ Institute’s Book of the Month.
